Curriculum Statement
The school aims to provide a high-quality, inclusive curriculum that improves life chances for all pupils, particularly providing first hand experiences. Our core goal is to ensure no child is left behind, with all pupils supported to develop the knowledge, skills, and confidence needed for future education and life.
The curriculum is built around the National Curriculum, with careful sequencing and progression to help pupils retain skills, concepts and knowledge in long-term memory. We help pupils develop the skills they need for future learning and life. Our curriculum builds key vocabulary, communication skills, and confidence, while encouraging independence and resilience through planned opportunities for self and peer support.
At Pipworth, we recognise that reading is the foundation for success across the entire curriculum and beyond. We place a strong emphasis on developing early reading skills, ensuring that every child builds the confidence oracy and fluency needed to access learning in all subjects and the world beyond.
Alongside this, we actively promote higher-order reading skills, encouraging pupils to think critically, make connections, and deepen their understanding of texts. Through our carefully planned curriculum, we also foster a genuine love of reading, inspiring children to explore, enjoy, and engage with a wide range of books and authors.
We want our pupils to have high ambitions for their futures, so we aim to inspire a lifelong love of learning. We plan engaging activities and experiences that capture pupils’ interest and connect across subjects. Therefore, we are ambitious for every pupil, ensuring all pupils have access to meaningful learning regardless of their starting point or need. Learning is designed around engaging themes and “big questions” to promote curiosity, deeper thinking, and a love of learning—particularly in STEM subjects.
As a school in an area of high disadvantage, we are committed to giving our pupils the life chances they deserve. We broaden their cultural knowledge and understanding of the world through visitors, performances, and experiences within the local and wider community such as AMRAC and Sheffield University.
At Pipworth, we celebrate our rich diversity. Our curriculum promotes respect, builds strong relationships, and fosters a sense of community. Our school values, chosen by pupils, underpin everything we do and support their personal and social development.
Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS)
Children in Nursery and Reception follow the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) curriculum. This provides a stimulating and supportive environment where children are encouraged to explore, question, and develop their curiosity about the world around them.
Through engaging and challenging learning experiences, children grow into confident, independent, and motivated learners, supported within a happy, safe, and nurturing setting.
Key Stages 1 and 2
At Pipworth, our curriculum is designed to support every child in becoming a confident and successful learner.
English and Maths
We use a mastery approach in English and Maths, supported by high-quality resources such as White Rose Maths, various manipulatives and models as well as engaging texts which support our high quality writing curriculum. This helps pupils develop a deep understanding and apply their learning with confidence.
Thematic Curriculum
Our wider curriculum is taught through exciting themed units, driven by ‘big questions’. This approach encourages curiosity, critical thinking, and meaningful links between subjects.
Assessment and Learning
We regularly check pupils’ understanding through class discussions, quizzes, questioning, and retrieval activities. Pupils also showcase their learning through meaningful final pieces, such as writing in different subject styles to answer key questions.
Our Achievements
We are proud to have achieved recognised awards in literacy, numeracy (Basic Skills Quality Mark), science (Quality Mark), and the arts, reflecting the quality of teaching and the outcomes our pupils achieve.
We are a Gold Rights Respecting School and highly regarded for high education outcomes, particularly for our disadvantaged pupils. The school received a congratulatory letter from the Education Secretary recently for the exemplary KS2 outcomes.
Enrichment & Extra-Curricular Activities
We provide a wide range of activities which enhance learning for our pupils; including arts workshops, sports clubs and partnerships with external organisations, such as the music service who provide whole class and individual music tuition to our pupils. These opportunities aim to inspire pupils and broaden their experiences.
We offer a wide range of sports clubs and fitness activities, giving pupils opportunities they may not usually access outside of school. Pupils regularly take part in competitions and visit different venues, helping to build confidence, teamwork, and a love of being active.

The school actively promotes:
- Democracy: through school council and pupil voice
- Rule of Law: via behaviour systems and education
